A FULLY BROADBAND-ENABLED RURAL ALBERTA

windmillThe following hypothetical but entirely plausible scenario is intended to illustrate the relevance of broadband telecommunication to the future of Alberta’s rural communities. The setting is east-central Alberta in the year 2020.

Eight years earlier, the region’s municipal governments partnered with provincial government in building a water distribution system to bring a safe and secure supply of potable water to farms, towns and villages throughout the region. During the build, a spare conduit was simultaneously plowed in alongside the water conduit. Later that year, in partnership with government and private interests, the region’s municipalities used the spare conduit to deploy an optical fibre-to-the-premise network. This highly capable and future-proof network now supports state-of-the-art broadband telecommunication services for homes, businesses and industries throughout the region.

ALBERTA’S HIGH-SPEED BULLET TRAIN – STILL TRAVELLING TROUGH THE PIPE DREAM?

mapceBut will it be faster than the plane?
My nephew’s question was so simple-sounding that I had to blink with discomfort and I needed to quickly digest his question in order to provide a suitable answer. As I stared at him while opening my mouth I could hear myself saying, “Yes and no.” Then immediately I corrected myself and said, “No and yes.” Still unhappy with my own answer, I said, “Yes, considering certain factors…

I think it was Einstein who said, “If you can’t explain it to a six-year old, you don’t understand it yourself.” So, I tried again to relate in simple terms to this ten-year old my own understanding of the current situation. That was a good way of sorting out what I know right now, in 2011, almost a decade since I first heard lots of ethusiatic ideas about this project, which has two principal names:
-    Alberta’s high-speed-bullet-train
-    Alberta’s high-speed rail.

THE BANFF CENTRE: AN ALBERTA CULTURAL SUPERLATIVE AND ITS FUTURE

banffcentrePart One of Two: RECRUITING AS THE THEATRE OF THE ABSURD

First of all, let me clarify one thing: Banff is still in Alberta, geographically and in every other way. Banff has always been in Alberta and never in British Columbia as I hear it being said once in a while or written in some poorly researched travel guide.

There is a special reason for my effusion of local patriotism and here perhaps I should quote Woodrow Wilson, "Patriotism begins at home". Indeed, as a Calgarian, I am fortunate to be so close to Banff in so many ways, but most importantly because during the last few decades the internationally famous Banff Centre has become one of the most advanced cultural zip codes in the world, right in my proverbial backyard, only an eighty minute drive away. Each time I head out to the west passing through the sweet splendour of the rolling foothills and the magnificence of the Canadian Rockies, I end up in Banff and I make sure that its Banff Centre is still there, where Alberta’s muses have originally intended.

Perhaps most of us would drive electric cars these days if batteries weren’t be such a costly component. Indeed, these batteries not only are expensive and heavy but the current technology still doesn’t allow for a fast and simple recharging procedure that would be comparable to filling up the tank with fossil...

ALBERTA GENERAL ELECTION: WHO'S IN...
“I’m in charge! I’m in charge! I’m in charge!” A few years ago, in my block, one of  the neighbours became the center of attention because of her unsuccessful struggle with her disobedient dogs, as she was really trying to make them behave when taking them for the daily walk. The dogs seemed to have a mind...

“To well dispose your audience to you and ill dispose them to your enemy.”(Aristotle:  On Rhetoric) Aristotle’s First Principle of Persuasion has been practiced since the dawn of democracy. On May 30, 1930, Alberta finally and utterly became the province of Albertans. From then on, Albertans were no longer glamorized squatters in their own province. Cognitive dissonance is a discomfort caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously. Many of us know about Aesop's fable with the fox and the grapes, where the fox decides the grapes were probably no good after he determines that he can't reach them: “The fox who longed for grapes, beholds with painThe tempting...

Aristotle maintained that women have fewer teeth than men. Presenting a historical fact in a narrow context in order to make a point is risky. With our recent General Election we saw surprising results.  The voter turn out was expected to be higher than the last election, and it was.  The outcome was a bit different from expected, yet the same.  We have had a Progressive Conservative government for more than 40 years.  The only difference...
